The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced plans to deport 79 Nigerians listed among the "worst of the worst" criminal offenders. The individuals were convicted of crimes including fraud, drug trafficking, assault, manslaughter, and robbery.
The DHS stated that the deportations align with President Donald Trump's promise to prioritize removals of undocumented migrants considered a threat to public safety. The arrests were carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers as part of a nationwide crackdown on criminal immigrants.
Some of the individuals listed for deportation include Joshua Ineh, convicted of a sex offence, Usman Momoh, convicted of aggravated assault involving a firearm, and Oluwole Odunowo, convicted of identity theft and mail fraud.
The Nigerian government has yet to officially respond to the latest deportation plans. The move has sparked concerns among Nigerians in the US, with some going into hiding or quietly returning home amid fears of arrest and deportation.
