A group of soldiers attempted to overthrow the government of Benin Republic, led by President Patrice Talon, in a coup attempt on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), announced the takeover on state television, claiming to have dissolved the government and suspended the constitution.

However, the presidency quickly dismissed the attempt, stating that President Talon is safe and the situation is under control. Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari assured that the coup plotters only controlled the state TV and the signal was cut after several minutes. The French Embassy reported gunfire near the presidential residence, but the presidency maintained that the regular army is regaining control.

The coup attempt comes as Benin Republic prepares for a presidential election in April 2026, with President Talon expected to step down after serving two terms. The country has experienced political tension and security challenges in recent years, including jihadist attacks in the north. The government has vowed to maintain stability and order, and the situation is being closely monitored by regional and international partners.
